"You are constructing your own reality with the choices you make...or don't make. If you really want a healthy pregnancy and joyful birth, and you truly understand that you are the one in control, then you must examine what you have or haven't done so far to create the outcome you want." ~ Kim Wildner, author of Mother's Intention: How Belief Shapes Birth
Pregnancy, labour and birth top the list of life changing experiences. Once you’ve gone through it, you can’t change it so of course you want to make it the best experience possible. How do you see this experience unfolding for you? Do you feel that you have all the knowledge and information required to give you the experience you want?
Women were born to birth, however, in this day and age we are dealing with a multitude of distractions and decisions when it comes to birth, and it's important to ensure you are not only physically and emotionally prepared, but well informed and supported, in order to achieve the birth experience you are seeking.
About Alison
Becoming a Doula
Coming from a large family, I have always loved and been surrounded by babies. My love of babies as a child soon turned into a fascination with pregnancy, and that fascination grew to become a calling. For a short while I toyed with the idea of becoming a midwife, however, the medical side never did appeal to me – I wanted the good stuff!. I wanted to be able to spend time with families, discussing their thoughts and anxieties. I wanted to be a part of the team at the birth. I wanted to be able to follow up with the families to see how they were going with the new addition.
When I found out there was such a thing as a Doula, I knew I what I needed to do. I studied hard, immersed myself in all things birthy, and in 2009, I gained my Doula certification and started my business: Bear With Me. I have since been privileged to attend many births and be of service to women and families in helping them achieve the birth experience they are hoping for.
Introducing Dancing For Birth™
My intention was always for Bear With Me to become something more than a portal for my Doula service. My vision is for Bear With Me to offer many services that are pregnancy, birth and baby related. When I saw that Stephanie Larson, the founder of Dancing For Birth™, was coming to Australia to train instructors, I jumped at the chance. As well as the fact that I love dancing, I love the philosophies behind Dancing For Birth™, some of which include:
Pregnancy, labour and birth are important transitions and rites of passage, not illnesses.
Pregnant and postpartum women should be encouraged to trust their instincts and be empowered to investigate their options and choices.
Active birth with few or no routine interventions has wide-reaching benefits for most mothers and babies.
Pregnancy, labour and birth involve a woman's mind, body, and spirit, and these need to be nurtured.
I also love that the classes are about education as well as fitness and fun. Many women do not know what their body will be physically doing during labour and birth, and to be able to share with them the knowledge of positions and movements that will assist them is very powerful. As the old saying goes: "Knowledge is power", and education leads people to make informed choices - and that's always going to lead to a better outcome for all!
What's next?
Much of what I do as a Doula and as a Dancing For Birth™ instructor involve numerous aspects of childbirth education, so it makes sense to get another certificate and a few more letters to put after my name, which is why I am currently studying to gain my Childbirth Educators certification. I hope to be offering Childbirth Education classes in the eastern suburbs of Victoria in the second part of 2012.
I am also continually adding 'tools to my toolkit' and will be attending several workshops this year including using hypnosis for labour and birth, as well as the use of homeopathics in pregnancy and birth. I have many more plans for the future, but for now, it's top secret! Please do come back and visit, or subscribe to my Blog (soon to be finished and to appear on this website!).
