About Me
I was first introduced to Bowen Therapy in August 2000. I had been suffering with a neuralgic condition for almost 2 years and after many doctors visits and trying every therapy possible I was told there was nothing that could be done for me, and I would have to take pain medication for the rest of my life!

As you can imagine I was very upset at the thought of taking pain relief while trying to raise my 3 young children. I was basically put in the too hard basket and was on my own.

That night I arrived to my part time job upset and a work colleague asked me what was wrong and I explained to him the constant pain I was in and that no one could help me. He then asked me if I had ever heard of Bowen Therapy as his mother was a therapist, he gave me her number and I thought I might as well give it a go as I had tried everything else! I made an appointment and saw Anne the following day.

I had absolutley no idea what to expect and was nervous as to whether it was going to hurt. I was relieved as the therapy is so gentle but confused to why she was making the gentle moves on my back when the pain was in the side of my face. Anne explained to me the first treatment is a full body balance, and will prepare me for the second treatment when the "whammy" happens! I made another appointment for the following week and went on my way not feeling any different.

When arriving for my second treatment Anne asked me how I was feeling and it wasn't until that moment when I realised the pain had eased, it had not gone but nowhere near as severe. I fell asleep during my second treatment and when finished made another appointment and went on my way.

The day before my third visit I realised I had "NO PAIN!" I went along anyway (to be on the safe side) and had my treatment. When I told Anne she had stopped my pain she turned to me and said "No I didn't i just woke your body up and it has healed itself!"

It has now been almost 11 years since my 2 years of pain and in only 2 Bowen Treatments it was gone! This was the first of my many encounters with my now very close friend and teacher Anne.

Since then I have had Bowen Therapy for back pain etc but the thing that changed my life was I was struck down with "Bell's Palsy!"

This was the most horrifying virus as it came upon me so suddenly and within hours one half of my face was totally paralysed. I was unable to blink, talk, or move my face properly at all. I went to the doctors and he said "its a virus, and can take up to three months to recover and could leave me with permanent paralysis!" I was totally devastated as there was absolutley nothing that could be done except wait.

I called Anne on the off chance Bowen Therapy could help me and she arrived the following day with her magic hands and I had my first treatment. One week later she returned for the second treatment and after this I felt nerve impulses twitching through my face on and off all day and night. This continued until my third treatment and by week four my Bells Palsy was totally gone, with no permanent damage at all!

I have been touched by Bowen Therapy and its amazing results, and although Bells Palsy was the most horrible virus to have it was the illness that changed my life, as this was when I decided to become a Bowen Therapist!

I have never looked back !

About Us
Bowen therapy is a remedial body technique that is gentle and relaxing. It helps the body's own healing resources to achieve balance and harmony, which can result in lasting relief from pain and discomfort.

Bowen is a holistic remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic conditions. It is gentle and relaxing and does not use manipulation. This makes it safe for people of all ages.

Bowen therapy helps the body’s own healing resources to achieve balance and harmony. This can result in rapid and often long-lasting relief from pain and discomfort, often where other modalities and treatments have not been effective. Benefits may be seen and measured after the first session.

Integrated body response

Bowen therapy is performed on the superficial and deep fascia. The fascia, or soft tissue, is the part of the connective tissue that envelops, separates and influences every organ and tissue in the body. It has been called the ‘endless web’ – recent studies have shown it to be the largest and richest sensory organ in the body, having a profound effect on the body’s physiology and function.

The procedure

A Bowen treatment consists of sequences of small moves at varying pressures, each at a specific site on the body. The treatment is pleasant – therapists use light, cross-fibre manoeuvres of muscle, tendon or ligament with no forceful manipulation.

A treatment will typically last between 30 minutes and one hour. It can be provided through a layer of light clothing, although you may be asked to remove heavy or thick garments. During this time, the therapist may leave the room for periods of 2–5 minutes at a time. This allows time for your body to respond to the treatment and for the necessary changes to occur in your body before commencing the next sequence of moves.

During the treatment, the therapist will discuss possible side effects from the treatment that show that the body’s self-healing process is working. They will emphasise the importance of body hydration (drinking plenty of water) and will recommend any other exercise, environmental or lifestyle changes necessary to maintain your wellbeing.

What you can expect

Bowen is not an ongoing therapy. In most cases, the recipient can expect substantial relief after just the first session and significant resolution or recovery within three sessions. However, chronic or long-standing conditions or repeat injury may require additional treatments. Some clients have periodic Bowen therapy sessions to maintain body integrity and balance and to prevent the onset of problems.

Bowen can help a range of disorders

Bowen balances the physical, mental and emotional planes of the body (this is called ‘body balancing’).

Special advice after your treatment

It is strongly advised that you do not have any other physical therapy or other forms of manipulation – such as massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy, acupuncture or kinesiology – for one week after the treatment. These things may undo the balance achieved through the Bowen treatment.

For the first week after treatment, you should also:

  • Avoid excessive heat or cold to areas that have been treated.
  • Stop using an electric blanket or hot water bottle.
  • Have lukewarm, not hot, baths.

Your therapist may also advise you to:

  • Avoid sitting for any longer than 30 minutes on the day of your visit without moving around.
  • Lying down is alright.
  • Walk as much as possible for three days (at least 15 minutes a day).
  • Drink as much pure water as is comfortable (at least five glasses a day) to help flush toxins from the body.
  • Avoid stimulating substances like coffee (pain-killers and anti-inflammatory medications are okay, if necessary).

Reactions that may be experienced include hot and cold flushes, emotional releases, headaches and body aches. These reactions are a positive sign that the healing process is working.

Choosing a Bowen therapist

It is best to choose a registered therapist. The Bowen Therapist State Associations and Federation only register members who have adequate training at accredited institutions and hundreds of hours of clinical practice. These therapists must maintain their level of expertise by completing continuous study and workshops each year. Before they can renew their membership with the Association, they must also have current Senior First Aid and professional indemnity insurance.
