CTE - Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy
Focus areas
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that typically arises from repetitive head injuries, often associated with contact sports such as football, boxing, or rugby. CTE is characterized by the accumulation of abnormal tau protein in the brain, which disrupts normal functioning. Unfortunately, CTE is difficult to diagnose while a person is still alive, as it often requires post-mortem examination of brain tissue. This lack of a clear diagnostic tool during life means that many people with CTE go undiagnosed, and their symptoms are often mistaken for other neurological or psychiatric conditions.
The symptoms of CTE can vary widely, but they generally include mood and behavioral changes such as increased aggression, depression, and impulsivity. Cognitive decline is also common, leading to memory loss, confusion, and problems with executive functioning. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and motor symptoms like balance problems or tremors. These symptoms can severely impact a person's quality of life and make daily tasks challenging.
My interest in CTE began when a family member, who had a history of playing sports, was diagnosed with the condition. They exhibited many of the hallmark symptoms, such as memory loss, mood swings, anger, slurred speech, and difficulty swallowing. Seeing their struggles firsthand led me to research extensively into CTE. I discovered that while there is no cure, several nutritional and lifestyle interventions can significantly improve the quality of life for those affected. These include anti-inflammatory diets, targeted supplementation to support brain health, and lifestyle changes aimed at reducing further brain trauma. Through these interventions, I’ve seen a marked improvement in the well-being of my family member, driving my commitment to helping others facing the same challenges.
