What is Lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system is not functioning correctly. It will result in long term swelling of one or more parts of the body. There are two forms of Lymphoedema, these are primary and secondary. Primary Lymphoedema becomes about when the lymphatic system is not fully developed and it begins to fail to correctly channel fluid from the affected limbs. It may be an issue that is present at the time of birth or throughout the teenage years. Secondary Lymphoedema may come about as a result of damage to the lymphatic nodes or vessels. This may occur where the person has experienced:
- Surgery involving the lymphatic system including removal of lymph nodes
- A severe injury
- Radiotherapy following cancer diagnosis
- An infection
Damage to the lymph nodes or vessels may cause a disturbance in the drainage of the lymph fluid from the affected part of the body.
