What is a Constructive Agenda?

Constructive styles of learning are based on the premise that we learn and remember by association, that is we make sense of new information only when it connects with what we already know.

So it starts with the client telling their life story (narrating it through talking, sand-play, creative arts, clay or art). The story is based on what they have come to understand about their problems and the assumptions that they have made about themselves. The therapist listens carefully with an open mind, for the left out bits of positive resistance and resiliance (deconstruction). Then the problem is separated from the person and their identity is left intact.

Re-construction can then take place as the positive self and the negative situation are not one. Hence the client can then rebuild their new identity and see themselves in a new light - strong and capable as a result of what they have been through rather than a victim of circumstance.

Constructive therapies such as Narrative & Solution-focused are different from the Structualist styles of counselling that some clients may be used to. The difference is in; how the therapist sees the client (as an expert in their own lives and hence collabrated with); the techniques that are used (conversational styles of discourse, respectful questioning) and the outcomes for the clients (sense of capability and agency).
