For centuries, acupuncture has been used to treat a variety of health issues. It is one of the highly sought branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine. At 5 Elements Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine in Carlton, New South Wales, we offer personalised treatments to help our clients restore balance and support their bodies' natural healing potential.

Acupuncture is one of the most widely used complementary therapies in Australia, if not the entire world, with more than 80% of general practitioners referring patients to an accredited acupuncturist in the previous year. Moreover, despite the fact that it is not part of the standard curriculum, approximately one-fifth of GPs have gone on to pursue postgraduate studies in acupuncture.

What is Acupuncture?

Small, fine needles are inserted into specific points on the skin during an acupuncture treatment session to effectively bring about balance and stimulate the body's ability to heal itself. Acupuncture's great healing power has been proven in scientific studies to be effective in treating a wide variety of conditions. For thousands of years, acupuncture has been an essential component of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

How Does It Work?

Acupuncture is based on an energy force known as Qi. This energy, or life force, flows throughout the body through invisible channels called meridians. Disease can occur if the flow of Qi in the meridians is restricted, disrupted or blocked. The disruption can be restored and the flow of Qi returned to its optimal level by inserting small fine needles into specific acupuncture points.

What Can Acupuncture Help With?

After thousands of years of practice and current research, it is undeniable that acupuncture is effective in treating a wide range of disorders, including;

  • Digestive problems
  • Gynaecological conditions
  • Neurological disorders
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Emotional distress
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Respiratory problems

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Qi?

Qi is often referred to as a "vital force" because it is responsible for the existence of the universe.  Qi is bioelectricity in the body, providing the power to perform daily activities such as growth, development, repair and protection from illness and disease.

2. Does acupuncture stimulate the nerves?

The answer is no. Acupuncture does not use the nervous system and instead relies on the meridian system.

3. Is acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture is rarely described as painful, and few people who have received acupuncture treatments would use this adjective. Many people describe it as warm, buzzy or tingly. Some people have no sensation of needles at all.
