In conventional farming, animals are being subjected to hormone injections and antibiotics. These are being used in order to increase production as well as prevent and treat animal diseases.
What is Organic Farming and How Does it Operate?
The use of any synthetic chemicals is prohibited in organic farming therefore antibiotics, anti-microbials, hormones and other growth promotants are not utilized. Instead the use of natural substances such as compost and nature’s way such as insect predators.
Organic farming provides us with the ability to improve our soil, provide uncontaminated waterways, protect native biodiversity and the ecosystem and show greater compassion to the welfare of animals. It is against organic regulations to inject hormones or antibiotics to the animal. Animal welfare in organic farming is highly regulated in order to provide humane and compassionate treatment. The killing of the animal is done in the most humane way possible.

- Although, there is a greater demand and supply of organic food, it is not as readily available as conventional foods. In saying that, however, big grocery chains are now beginning to stock a wider range of organic foods;
- Organic fruits and vegetables are produced according to the seasons, making it more difficult to purchase a specific food when needed at any time of the year.

- Readily available.
Cons of Conventional Foods
- Toxic residues;
- Negative effects on the environment;
- Does not have animal welfare at the forefront of its farming methods;
- Some research suggests that conventional fruits and vegetables may not be as rich in nutrients as organic foods;
- Often conventional foods have been stored in cold rooms for many months.
