The E. coli bacteria exists harmlessly in the digestive tract, but when it enters the acidic environment of the bladder, it causes inflammation. Treatment can include antibiotics to kill the bacteria, but usually, natural treatments can be just as effective.
Natural Treatments for Cystitis
Natural treatments for cystitis include those that flush bacteria out of the system, reduce acidity in the bladder and urinary tract and preventative measures. Some natural treatments that have been shown to be effective include:- Studies have shown that cranberries contain chemical compounds that prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder. Drink diluted, unsweetened cranberry juice or take cranberry tablets rather than sweetened cranberry juice. A good health food store will have the products you need.
- Take 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda mixed in a glass of water to reduce acidity. You can safely take this several times a day.
- Drink plenty of water to flush out the bacteria.
- Boost your body's ability to fight off the bacteria with vitamins and herbs. Garlic, echinacea, vitamin A and C and zinc are all recommended immune system boosters.
- Make sure even trace amounts of faecal matter cannot enter the vagina.
- Avoid using scented soaps or bath salts. These can be harmful to healthy vaginal flora and encourage the growth of unhealthy bacteria.
- Avoid tight clothing.
- Wear natural fibres such as cotton instead of synthetic underwear. Natural fibres "breathe," while synthetic fibres create a closed environment for bacteria to breed.
