What is Cystitis?

Conditions Cystitis is a common urinary tract infection. Women more commonly experience cystitis, but both men and women can suffer from the disease. Most often, cystitis is caused by the E. coli (Escherichia coli) bacteria,  which enters the bladder through the urinary tract. In turn, the bacteria causes the painful inflammation that is one of the primary symptoms of cystitis. Although not dangerous or life threatening, if left untreated, cystitis can lead to serious kidney problems.

Symptoms of Cystitis

  • A burning sensation when urinating.
  • Frequent urge to urinate.
  • Cloudy urine or sometimes blood in urine.
  • Pain in the lower abdomen.
  • Strong, bad smelling urine.
All or some of these symptoms may be present. In order to determine if cystitis is the cause of these symptoms, the urine must be examined under a microscope to reveal the presence of the E. coli bacteria.

The E. coli bacteria exists harmlessly in the digestive tract, but when it enters the acidic environment of the bladder, it causes inflammation. Treatment can include antibiotics to kill the bacteria, but usually, natural treatments can be just as effective.

Natural Treatments for Cystitis

Natural treatments for cystitis include those that flush bacteria out of the system, reduce acidity in the bladder and urinary tract and preventative measures. Some natural treatments that have been shown to be effective include:
  • Studies have shown that cranberries contain chemical compounds that prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder. Drink diluted, unsweetened cranberry juice or take cranberry tablets rather than sweetened cranberry juice. A good health food store will have the products you need.
  • Take 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda mixed in a glass of water to reduce acidity. You can safely take this several times a day.
  • Drink plenty of water to flush out the bacteria.
  • Boost your body's ability to fight off the bacteria with vitamins and herbs. Garlic, echinacea, vitamin A and C and zinc are all recommended immune system boosters.
Preventative measures are those that help prevent the E. coli from entering the urethra (the tube through which urine passes) and/or help prevent bacteria from spreading. Some of these include:
  • Make sure even trace amounts of faecal matter cannot enter the vagina.
  • Avoid using scented soaps or bath salts. These can be harmful to healthy vaginal flora and encourage the growth of unhealthy bacteria.
  • Avoid tight clothing.
  • Wear natural fibres such as cotton instead of synthetic underwear. Natural fibres "breathe," while synthetic fibres create a closed environment for bacteria to breed.
If natural treatments are not effective, consult your doctor and have your condition diagnosed. While cystitis is common in women, it is less common in men and some of the symptoms of the disease may be associated with prostate conditions in older men. Children rarely get cystitis. If a child is experiencing the symptoms of cystitis, it is advisable to seek professional medical help immediately. Their symptoms may be associated with a bladder valve abnormality called vesico-ureteric reflux, which causes urine to flow towards the kidneys and can cause serious complications.
