Colitis is swelling or inflammation of the large intestine (colon) and/or rectum. It’s a painful condition that causes abdominal bloating and cramping, diahorrea and nausea. You may also have a constant urge to open your bowels.
Different Colitis
There are many different types of colitis. Microscopic colitis causes non-bloody diahorrea, whereas ulcerative colitis is characterised by loose, bloody stools. It is often accompanied by fever, fatigue and weight loss. Ulcerative colitis can cause inflammation in joints and fistulas or obstruction in the digestive tract. In all cases, colitis can be extremely inconvenient and distressing.
Cause of Colitis
The cause of the colitis isn’t known although there is speculation it may be caused by:
- Medications such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) anti-depressants
- Infection
- Autoimmune disease
If you suspect you or your children have colitis it’s important to have it diagnosed and treated to prevent malnourishment or an intestinal obstruction. Conventional treatment uses a combination of medication and diet to manage colitis. Natural treatments also work well and may include:
Aromatherapy for Colitis
Massages with essential oils (such as patchouli and peppermint) can help improve bowel function and provide relief from bloating and cramping.
Chiropractic for Colitis
Misalignment in the spine or pelvis may cause the digestive tract to not function optimally. A chiropractor can readjust the spine to allow for better digestion.
Nutrition for Colitis
There is no specific diet for colitis but you might find cutting out fatty and spicy food helps. Taking probiotics to ensure your gut has ‘friendly bacteria’ is also beneficial. A nutritionist can devise a diet plan for you based on your specific symptoms to ensure you are getting all your nutritional requirements.
Osteopathy for Colitis
Osteopathy can be very effective in treating gastrointestinal complaints, including colitis. An osteopath will use gentle massage and manipulation to help improve bowel function.
Naturopathy for Colitis
Naturopaths take a holistic approach to treating colitis. They may recommend selenium and vitamins to reduce inflammation. They may also prescribe herbs, slippery elm and aloe vera juice, which many people with colitis find soothing.
Homeopathy for Colitis
Homeopathy is effective in treating colitis. Your homeopath will take a detailed medical history to prescribe appropriate treatment for your specific symptoms.
Acupuncture for Colitis
Acupuncture, combined with traditional Chinese herbal therapy (including herbal enemas) can be effective in treating colitis.
Yoga for Colitis
Yoga is very beneficial if you suffer from colitis. There are specific asanas that can help with digestion and bowel function. Pranayama (breathing exercises) are also beneficial for digestion and helps reduce stress, which can exacerbate symptoms.
A combination of natural treatments can be very effective in managing colitis.
