CBD oil has been flying off the shelves here and abroad. But what exactly is it? And what are the benefits of CBD oil anyway? We’ve done the digging to bring you all the answers.
What is CBD Oil?
Our article ‘What is CBD Oil?’ covers this question well. But just to recap, CBD oil (cannabiodiol) is a chemical compound found in hemp. Unlike THC – another compound in cannabis – it doesn’t cause a high.
Some countries do sell marijuana-based CBD oils at dispensaries. But here we’re discussing hemp-based CBD, which contains zero psychoactive properties.
So CBD oil provides all the benefits of the cannabis plant, without affecting the mind.
Now let’s look at some of those benefits in more detail:
CBD oil for mental illness
CBD oil has been shown to help treat mental illness including schizophrenia, addiction, and epilepsyepilepsy in children.
CBD oil for chronic pain
Pre-clinical studies suggest CBD oil could help alleviate chronic pain, as well as arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS) pain, and muscle pain. Canada has even approved the oil to treat MS and cancer pain.
Some health experts are hopeful CBD oil will help people living with pain avoid opioids and overcome painkiller addictions.
CBD oil fights bacteria
Hospitals around the world are battling drug-resistant bacteria strains. And initial research has indicated cannabinoids like CBD destroy these strains as well as other bacteria. While a 2011 study showed it slows down tuberculosis growth in rats.
CBD combats inflammation
Another reason CBD oil is making waves globally is because it’s been shown to reduce chronic inflammation that can cause diseases such as cancer, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer’s and others.
Choosing CBD oil
As you can see, CBD oil makes many promises. When choosing an oil, be sure to do your homework – especially as the new industry is still virtually unregulated.
Look for CBD oil that is sourced and extracted using eco-friendly, non-flammable methods. You’ll also want to choose cannabinoids from certified organic farms wherever possible.
