While in India, I got hooked on turmeric. There, it’s been used for more than 4000 years to boost the flavour of food and treat a range of ailments. Now recent research is catching up, with studies showing that the spice could keep cancer, dementia and other conditions at bay.
Turmeric for Alzheimer’s Disease
Scientists say curcumin – turmeric’s active ingredient – may be an effective Alzheimer’s treatment. How? Apparently its anti-inflammatory properties break down amyloid plaques in the brain, which can cause the disease. However, more research into this link is needed.
Turmeric to Prevent Cancer
A 2006 study found that curcumin may stop colon cancer growth in the body. Another study found that it could also prevent prostate cancer, when used with veggies like broccoli.
Could it also prevent other cancers such as breast, pancreatic and skin cancer? Sources say that while it’s not a definite cure, including more turmeric in your diet could be helpful.
Turmeric Helps the Heart
Do you have high cholesterol? Turmeric may be just the ticket for lowering your levels. This is because it can help prevent "bad" cholesterol – LDL – from collecting in blood vessels. By keeping arteries clear, this may help keep your ticker happy and healthy.
Turmeric for Healthy Immunity
Battling colds or flu this season? Some studies have found that the spice could lessen cold and flu symptoms, while keeping bacteria and viruses at bay.
Improve Your Digestion with Turmeric
Got a dodgy stomach? Turmeric may be what your gallbladder needs to produce more bile and reduce indigestion.
How to Add Turmeric to your Diet
As you can see, more research needs to be done into the health benefits of turmeric. But if you’re keen to try it for yourself, it’s easy to add the spice to your diet. You could grate it, take a supplement or simply add it to a curry. Enjoy!
