Myotherapy is a relatively new physical therapy that focuses on treating the soft and connective tissues of the body drawing on a variety of modalities. Myofacial pain is the medical term for describing muscular pain and discomfort, which is where the modality name is derived from. Treatment is directed at the fascia or soft tissue component of our connective tissue, which includes the muscles, ligaments and tendons.  These elements provide the crucial support and protection for the internal organs and structures of the body, and if stimulated in the appropriate way can promote healing of the nervous, skeletal and circulatory systems, amongst others. Muscular pain is typically the result of an injury or strain related to repetitive motions, general fatigue, lack of exercise or a medical condition.

Myotherapy Treatment

Myotherapy can be used to treat a range of conditions and ailments, including:

  • General muscular tension
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Sports related injuries
  • Poor posture and inflexibility
  • Arthritic pain
  • Stress related pain

Myotherapy Consultation

Myotherapists use a combination of modalities in a consultation to effect healing, including:

  • Musculoskeletal alignment – this is typically part of an initial assessment of a patient, and may reveal the root cause of a problem
  • Tissue manipulation – this includes soft and deep tissue massage
  • Dry Needling – this technique allows the therapist to increase blood flow and nullify trigger points
  • Stretching – specific stretching techniques are used to increase blood flow and reduce tension
  • Cupping – another technique that improves blood flow
  • Exercise – exercise can help to strengthen weak muscles and promote healing
