Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT, has long been a source of debate. Recent discoveries, however, have suggested HRT is a "safe and effective" way of managing menopause. So what is hormone replacement therapy, what are its benefits and is it indeed safe? Let’s look at the facts…
What is HRT?
Menopause affects women in different ways. For some, it can be incredibly challenging and debilitating. As menstruation ends, symptoms such as night sweats, poor sleep, urinary problems, hot flushes, concentration issues, hair loss, mood swings and a loss of breast size can result.
Hormone Replacement Therapy is used to alleviate the symptoms of menopause. For the best effects, HRT is started before menopause occurs, before the age of 60 or within ten years of menopause starting.
HRT is available in tablets, skin patches, IUD, gel and creams. If you’ve had a hysterectomy, you’ll be prescribed an oestrogen-only formulation. If not, you’re likely to be prescribed a combination of progesterone and oestrogen.
Is HRT Safe and Effective?
Several studies have found that HRT can help alleviate menopause symptoms and may even help decrease the risk of osteoporosis and related fractures, heart disease and dementia.
A decade ago, fears were raised about the safety of HRT, after a major study was interpreted as linking HRT with strokes and breast cancer. However, the interpretation was found to be incorrect and the latest evidence suggests that the benefits outnumber the risks for most women.
However, most prescription medicine carries potential side effects. A small risk of blood clots and some cancers have been suggested. And while more research is needed to conclusively claim this, it means HRT isn’t recommended for women who have a history of cancer or clots.
Alternatives to HRT
HRT isn’t the only solution for treating menopause symptoms. While there is no conclusive evidence, natural therapies such as acupuncture and herbal medicine may help. A naturopath may also be able to advise you on ways to navigate menopause naturally.
Health experts say the best thing you can do to manage menopause is to stay healthy – have a healthy diet, exercise daily and ensure you’re getting all the minerals you need as you age.
