You may have been told about the colourful plant foods that are good for your health because of their phytochemical properties.
Turmeric is no different. It has a range of health promoting benefits due to curcumin, the yellow pigment found in turmeric. There are so many studies indicating the nutritional benefits of antioxidants.
How to select and store
Turmeric is available as a ground powder and fresh and can be bought in food shops. Fresh turmeric should be free of dark spots and be crisp and can be stored in the fridge where it will keep for a month. Turmeric powder should be stored in a cool dark, dry place where it will keep for up to a year.
Tumeric’s deep orange colour can easily stain, so avoid getting it on your clothing.
For this recipe, you can use fresh, grated turmeric or you can use powdered turmeric which is less messy. It also won't require gloves to keep your fingers from staining.

- 1 1/2-inch piece ginger, peeled and grated
- 1 cardamom pod
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 black peppercorns
