Are you looking for a meditation technique that provides you with a deep state of rest and higher mental alertness, as well as being easy to practice?  Transcendental meditation is perfect for you.  Read on to learn more.

What is Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental meditation (TM) is the name of a meditation technique that was developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1957.  It is a way of experiencing pure awareness and it involves sitting in a comfortable position with your eyes closed for 15-20 minutes twice a day, while mentally repeating a mantra.  In this technique, a mantra is a “thought-sound” that has a known vibratory effect but does not have a meaning as such.  The TM teacher chooses a mantra that is suitable for the student.  No concentration or contemplation is involved.

What Does Transcendental Meditation Involve?

During TM practice, the mind and body both settle to a unique state of restful alertness.  As the mind becomes silent, the body deeply relaxes.  At the most settled state of awareness, the mind transcends all activity to experience the simplest form of awareness, called Transcendental Consciousness.

Research has shown that Transcendental Consciousness is associated with the following:

• greater creativity
• improved learning
• a higher IQ
• higher moral reasoning
• increased brainwave coherence
• improved neurological functioning of the body

TM allows you to develop your energy, creativity, and intelligence, in turn unlocking the potential of the mind and body for better health, happiness, and success in life.  TM is not difficult to learn – there are seven easy steps that can be learnt by anyone from age 10.  It is natural and effortless.  TM is not a religion, philosophy, or lifestyle.

The Benefits of Transcendental Meditation

TM allows the body to achieve a deep state of rest, even deeper than sleep, while the mind remains alert in a state of inner calm and wakefulness.  Practiced regularly, TM gives you more alertness and efficiency in all areas of your life.  It also removes deep stress and tension within the body.

Research has shown that TM is more effective than other types of meditation for reducing anxiety, increasing self-actualisation, improving psychological health, and reducing the use of cigarettes, alcohol, and recreational drugs.

TM can be practiced anywhere as long as you are sitting comfortably with your eyes closed for 20 minutes.  You do not need any special equipment.
