Kale, quinoa and goji berries were the flavour of the year in 2013. This year, a new sumptuous spread of superfoods has emerged. Buffalo berries, teff, salsify and beluga lentils are just a few ‘medicine foods’ set to revolutionise the dinner plate this year.
What are Superfoods?
Superfoods are food and medicine. They have the power to nourish, fuel and heal our bodies – and many have been around for eons.
When you eat superfoods, you fill your body with a rich recipe of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that boost your immunity, look after all of your organs and restore balance.
Teff
Teff is the new quinoa. The grain is packed with vitamin C and calcium – great news for gluten intolerant folk or those who have ditched wheat.
Salsify
The oyster plant – or salsify – is a gorgeous root vegetable that’s believed to regulate metabolism and help maintain a healthy weight.
Kimchi
If you’ve been to Korean – or a Korean barbecue restaurant – you’ve probably tried kimchi. This spicy pickled accompaniment aids gut health and has been shown to lower cholesterol and weight.
Buffalo Berries
Keen to add another berry to your snack list? Try buffalo berries. They contain lycophene, a pigment common to red veggies and fruits and are packed with antioxidants, to keep inflammation at bay.
Beluga Lentils
Lentils are essential to any healthy diet. But beluga lentils are the new kids on the block – they may help ward off cancer, heart disease and inflammation.
Pichuberry
Hailing from peru, this superfood fruit is full of Vitamin D – providing almost 40 per cent of your daily requirements – and may even slow tumour growth.
Kiwicha
Kiwicha, or amaranth, is packed full of protein and antioxidants. This means it may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and keep the heart healthy.
