‘Let Thy Food be Thy Medicine and Medicine our Food.’ Hippocrates, 431 B.C.
Our bodies are the most amazing machines and very often we don’t give our miracle workers enough credit. Very often our body is taken for granted.
Our bodies work best when they are given the right tools to work with. By the right tools I mean the right food. Given processed junk food, our machines will quite literally break down before our very eyes. Given fresh, whole food our bodies work at their best pace, enabling and maintaining good health. Given the right tools, our bodies will facilitate us on the road back to speedy recovery.
When we are stressed and run down, our immune systems are the first to fall and recovering from an illness may take longer than it normally would.
It is important to note that we need good nutrition for healing. During times of recovery and healing, our bodies need additional nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin A, protein, zinc. Sometimes we might need increased fish oils.
Which Foods are Healing Foods?
In order to achieve and maintain optimal health, it is best to nourish ourselves on whole, fresh foods:
- Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes, wholegrains, meat and fish. Very often, we need to decrease certain foods such as sodium, saturated fats;
- Antioxidants are the superfoods for healing. Blueberries are extremely high in antioxidants. They can, however be found in all fruits and vegetables in various forms;
- Drink lots of water:
- Be aware of mindful eating. Sit down to a family meal.
If you feel that you need guidance in choosing the right healing foods, or you feel your healing process is taking longer than you would like/expect, make an appointment with your naturopath or nutritionist.
