Should You Cut Out Wheat?

Health Tips
Last Updated Mar 08, 2022

On my naturopath's advice last year, I cut all wheat and dairy from my diet. The proof is in the wheat-free, dairy-free pudding: I feel lighter, leaner, my skin is clearer and my digestion is finally functioning the way it should. If you've been thinking about cutting out wheat, this guide may help you on your quest.

Do You Need to Cut Out Wheat?

Most health professionals will tell you that you shouldn't cut out any food group unless you have an intolerance, allergy or another diagnosed reason to do so. That's why your first step should be to consult a health care professional, naturopath, nutritionist or dietitian. They'll undertake a full health assessment and see if your problems (such as bloating, constipation and wind) are wheat-related or due to something else. And if they do advise you to reduce or limit your wheat intake, they'll help you do so safely.

Why Cut Out Wheat?

If you do have a diagnosed wheat intolerance, cutting out your daily bread can be wise. Many people claim to have lost weight from ditching wheat. This could be because wheat has a high glycemic index (GI) which increases blood sugar levels.

This could also be why diabetics find they ‘cure' themselves when cutting out wheat, since their blood sugar levels plummet.

Others say their skin, mood and overall wellbeing improves, while some say adopting a no-wheat diet has helped reduce their aches and pains.

Side Effects of Cutting out Wheat

If you are advised to cut out wheat, it may not be an easy feat. You might experience side effects such as headaches, fatigue, aches and pains. These feelings should subside within a week, however, as your body adjusts to the change.

To relieve symptoms, try drinking more water and see your health care professional if you become unwell.
