Reiki is a non-invasive touch therapy designed to effect healing and rebalance energy levels, for a wide range of illnesses and conditions; including anorexia nervosa. Natural therapies and treatments are growing in popularity, and are increasingly utilised alongside conventional medical practices.
What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Anorexia is an eating disorder that is classified as a serious psychological condition. Anorexia sufferers are obsessed with being thin, which manifests itself as an unhealthy relationship with food. Avoidance of food is typically accompanied with obsessive exercising, all in an effort to attain a mythical ‘thin’ state. This typically has serious consequences for a sufferer’s mental and physical health. Most anorexia sufferers are typically female and in their teens, though the condition is recorded in males as well as adults of both sexes. Conventional treatment is via psychotherapy and nutritional support; amongst others.
Anorexia Symptoms
The most obvious physical symptom of this eating disorder is a dramatic drop in body weight. Other physical and health impacts include reduced bone density, an irregular heartbeat and thinning hair; amongst others. Psychological impacts include depression, anxiety and general social alienation. Severe cases of anorexia may also result in suicidal tendencies, which would typically require hospitalisation. Diagnosis of anorexia nervosa is normally via a GP, who may refer the patient to a number of other health professionals, including psychotherapists, counsellors and/or a nutritionist.
Reiki for Anorexia Nervosa
Reiki is a holistic healing tradition that utilises energy transference to effect healing and relaxation in patients. Reiki is one of a number of energy healing techniques that identify an energy aura in all humans – otherwise known as chi or prana. Illness and ailments are typically indicative of an imbalance in this vital energy.
Reiki works by a practitioner laying their hands gently on a client’s body, from which they are able to detect the specific location of the blockage. The energy transference that occurs restores and balances the flow of energy in the body. A typical reiki treatment will last from 30 minutes to an hour, with sessions taking place on a massage table, usually fully clothed. Reiki can help an anorexia sufferer to recover their self belief and reconnect to their bodies, as well as boost energy levels and general confidence.
