Reflexology, the gentle application of pressure to specific points of the body, has been practiced for centuries, though has only been recognized and appreciated by the Western world fairly recently. The technique works by relieving the energy pathways that run through the body which can become blocked over time. This is typically achieved by manipulating points on the hands and feet, which correspond to various organs in the body. For pregnant women reflexology also offers the opportunity to provide some much needed relief in this time of rapid and drastic change for their body. Jennifer Pyke from Soulful Touch, who specializes in maternity reflexology, kindly agreed to share her knowledge with the ntpages

How long have you been exposed to natural therapies and reflexology in particular?

“I have been interested in helping people in various ways since I was young - from volunteer work all the way through to helping to heal. My journey begun some 20 years ago when I started studying Reiki. This lead to an interest in helping others, especially those who believe in hands on healing. In 2002 I started studying for a Bachelor in Health Science in both Naturopathy and Homeopathy. During the course of my studies I took a class in Reflexology as an extra subject and saw a real difference in my student patient after just one treatment. I was completely hooked, and ended up changing my courses completely and ended up qualifying in Reflexology and Massage – which I love.”

What training have you undergone?

“I graduated from Melbourne College of Natural Medicine with a Diploma in Reflexology. I also have a Certificate IV in Massage and a Certificate in Maternity Reflexology and am a professional member of the Reflexology Association of Australia and the Australian Association of Massage Therapists.  I am currently continuing my studies towards obtaining a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Homoeopathy.”

What are the wider benefits of reflexology?

“Reflexology is a non-invasive discipline that can help to relieve a wide range of conditions, but is most associated with relieving stress and tension, and boosting the lymphatic system which aids in the removal of toxins. It also helps to improve blood supply and circulation.”

How can it help a pregnant patient?

“Reflexology can relieve a wide range of pain and discomfort associated with pregnancy, including morning sickness, back ache and fluid retention in the ankles and legs. There is also evidence that indicates that women who have had regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy have shorter labours. Reflexology is a natural therapy that complements the natural state of pregnancy.”

Tell us a little more about how it can help with morning sickness?

“The balancing and harmonising qualities of reflexology can support a woman’s ability to shake off the effects of morning sickness by stimulating, sedating and balancing points on the feet, hands and ears.”

Describe your reflexology technique for a pregnant patient?

“Reflexology treatments are very gentle and often put the patient to sleep. It’s as simple as removing your shoes and relaxing in a reclining chair while we complete a heath questionnaire and work out the best treatment plan. This can be used on the feet, hands and ears, depending on the health issues involved. A typical treatment for a pregnant patient would focus on the skeletal system to help with the changes in posture while carrying a baby. This may include lymphatic stimulation to help reduce the swelling of the ankles and feet as well as stress release techniques to help the mother relax and prepare for labour.”

Are there special considerations for treating pregnant women?

“Reflexology is a natural therapy that will not cause the body to do something unnatural. While there is no evidence that reflexology has ever been responsible for a miscarriage, these are more common in the first trimester of pregnancy, so we tend not to treat during this period. To be safe only consult a qualified practitioner who is experienced in all stages of pregnancy.”

How late into a pregnancy can you perform reflexology?

“There is no cut off date for performing reflexology, many clients enjoy treatments during the first stage of labour and some even choose to have their reflexologist as part of the labour team. I also often teach the partner some techniques to use on the mother during the labour.”
