Nutrition is an important element for a healthy functioning mind and body, and can be helpful in aiding recovery from illness and disease, including prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, particularly those over 50 years of age.
What is the Prostate Gland?
The prostate is a small gland surrounding the urethra in males, between the bladder and penis. It is an integral part of the male reproductive system and is responsible for producing the fluid that protects and nourishes sperm. This is secreted together with semen, and is ejaculated during sexual intercourse. The prostate has a tendency to enlarge in later life, which can cause discomfort and inconvenience for an individual, and is thought to relate to decreasing levels of testosterone in the body.
Symptoms of Prostate Cancer
Early symptoms of the disease are absent or insignificant, which often means prostate cancer is diagnosed late, which makes treatment more complex. Typical symptoms include:
- Blood in the urine
- Difficulty urinating
- A sensation of a full bladder
- A persistent need to urinate
Nutrition for Prostate Cancer
A nutritionist may recommend a range of foods for help in reducing the risk of prostate cancer. The antioxidant lycopene, which tomatoes are rich in, has been found to be helpful in reducing the risk of prostate cancer as well as heart disease. Selenium is another mineral that has been shown to reduce the likelihood of developing advanced prostate cancer, and a diet high in lean meats, seafood, wholegrain, eggs and garlic should help in this regard. It has also been shown to boost the antioxidant capacity of the body, and may also limit cell damage caused by cancer. A nutritionist or dietitian may also recommend a course of supplements, to complement your diet.
