New Food Trends to Try
Every year there are new food trends to try and 2016 hasn’t disappointed, with loads of weird and wonderful produce to tuck into. Let’s look at some of the best:
1. Poke (po-key)
We love a new salad, and the poke is the fresh Hawaiian take on a healthy bowl of greens. It has raw fish, fruits, veggies, seasonings, and sauce. Some say it’s bound to replace sushi as the lunchtime staple. Watch this space…
2. Coconut flour
Health nuts have been using coconut flour as a wheat substitute for a while now, but this year it’s becoming more mainstream. It adds a lovely coconut flavour to cakes and biscuits, as well as pancakes and other baked delights. Best of all, you’ll get around 5 grams of fibre per 2 tablespoons – and be able to offer it to your gluten-free friends and family.
3. Bowled out
Poke isn’t the only healthy bowl to keep us healthy and satisfied in 2016. Bowl foods in general are becoming big business. From acai bowls to power bowls and even smoothie bowls, you’re bound to find one you love. Make your own with fresh flavours and favourite foods, being careful to balance proteins with vegetables and other healthy goodies.
4. Seaweed
Say goodbye to kale and hello to its friend from the sea. Yes, seaweed is finally a more popular ingredient. Loaded with antioxidants, iodine, fibre, and healthy fats, seaweed is one of those all-round superfoods. Snack on it or add it to stir fries and other dishes.
5. Matcha powder
Green and resembling moss, matcha powder from Japan is working its way into restaurants and kitchens around the world. It’s helping give a nutritional hit to everyday meals such as curries, breads, and grain dishes.
Why try it? Because it’s said to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and Parkinson’s – thanks to its high amount of antioxidants.
