How to Choose a Yoga Mat

Yoga mats may all look the same, but not all will be suited to your practice. So we've done some digging to bring you these top tips for buying a yoga mat – whether it's your first or 50th!

Get a grip

The last thing you want in yoga is to slip and slide while trying to focus on your breath and move into an asana. So grip is the first thing to look at when shopping for a yoga mat.

Don't be afraid to try it out! Yes, we're saying it's OK to downward dog in the middle of the store. Try a few asanas that require good grip and ensure your mat can handle it. Remember too that you'll likely sweat during practice, so go for the best grip you can get.

How's it made?

Many yoga mats are made from PVC or rubber, with a little stick. This gives you a good grip during intense practice. You can also opt for mats made from natural fibres such as jute – but they may not be as grippy. It all comes down to personal preference – if you are environmentally conscious, look for a mat made from recycled materials. PVC mats do contain chemicals.

Thick or thin

If you're just starting out, you'll want a yoga mat with plenty of padding. It will take time to build your strength and flexibility – and you don't want to be pressing into the hard studio floor! A thin mat can put you at risk of injury – which is something we want to avoid in yoga!

If you're a little more experienced, you can test out a yoga mat's thickness by getting into a headstand. You'll want all the padding you can get when your head is supporting your entire body weight.

Look beyond the price tag

If you're on a budget, a $10 yoga mat can be a tempting buy. Just bear in mind that it may not last as long as a pricier mat, or give you the comfort you need as your practice progresses.

For your first few classes, consider hiring a mat from the studio. Then if you know yoga is for you, consider saving up to invest in a quality yoga mat. Sure you may have to spend between $30 to $100 for a top-notch mat, but it will make a tremendous difference to your practice. Look for brand names and shop around for reviews before choosing.

Try before you buy

Above all, test out a yoga mat before buying. You may love the colour and design, but it might be too short or sticky or slippery or thin or thick. Ask your yoga teacher for their tips, and ask to try out their mat.
