What is the Prostate Gland?
The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system, and is situated between the bladder and penis. It is primarily responsible for producing the liquid that protects individual sperm in semen. When ejaculation occurs this liquid is squeezed into the urethra and expelled with the sperm. Besides cancer of the prostate, other common conditions associated with the organ include an inflamed and enlarged prostate gland – the latter which often affects older men.

It has also been shown to reduce the size of an inflamed prostate gland, and has been reported to offer comparable or improved results when compared to current prescribed medications. Extracts of pygeum or the African plum tree, is also reputed to be effective in increasing urine flow and reducing testosterone retention in the prostate. Other natural remedies that have been shown to be beneficial for a healthy prostate gland include tea, olive oil extracts, soybean products and pomegranate; amongst others. These may well be prescribed by a herbalist for their nutritional properties, as part of an overall treatment plan.
