Last Updated Dec 09, 2020

Kelp, or seaweed, has so many nutritional benefits it's widely regarded as a miracle plant. Kelp improves thyroid function, energy levels and digestion, keeps the brain and liver working well, acts as an anti-inflammatory and even improves nail growth.

Kelp: A Nutritional Powerhouse

Kelp contains more than 70 vitamins, minerals, enzymes, proteins and trace elements including:

Kelp Improves Thyroid Function

Kelp's high iodine levels make it ideal for ensuring optimal thyroid function, potentially improving metabolism and energy and helping prevent weight gain. Kelp also helps the thyroid regulate body temperature. This may help menopausal women suffering hot flushes or if you have chronically low body temperature. Kelp is a great option for people who are allergic to chemical iodine.

Kelp Helps Overall Health

Kelp also improves:

  • Digestion
  • Constipation
  • Pancreatic function
  • Pituitary gland function
  • Energy levels
  • Metabolism
  • Weight loss
  • Liver function
  • Brain function and memory loss
  • Arthritis by acting as an inflammatory for the joints

Kelp Caution

Kelp is easily absorbed and is a great way to get a whole host of supplements. However, too much iodine can lead to hyperthyroidism. It is generally recommended that adults get 150 micograms of iodine daily. For children it is half that amount. If you take kelp supplements or add it to cooking, be aware that table salt and other food may contain iodine.

If you have a history of thyroid problems always talk to your doctor before taking kelp.

Kelp Easy to Include in Diet

Japanese and other Asian countries have eaten kelp for centuries.

Kelp has a naturally salty flavour and can be sprinkled on food in place of salt. You can add granules or powder to soups, sauces, smoothies and casseroles. You can even replace the salt in a basic biscuit recipe and an energy-boosting kelp biscuit for afternoon tea. If you really don't like the taste of kelp tablets or liquid are an equally beneficial alternative.

Whether you eat kelp in your food or take a tablet you'll be amazed at how beneficial it is for your whole body.
