You've been looking forward to your holiday for months. So the last thing you want is to get sick or injured during your travels.
But how can you get and stay healthy as you roam the globe? Here are some top tips to try.
1. Get Travel Vaccinations
One of the easiest ways to prevent illness overseas is to be vaccinated. Smart Traveller – the Australian Government's travel advisory site – recommends visiting a GP at least two months before you set off.
Ask for a general health check, get your prescriptions and medications up to date, and ask what vaccinations you'll need for the destination.
Your GP or travel heath clinic will have a list of recommended vaccinations for each destination. In fact, some countries won't let you in unless you have proof of certain vaccinations.
For example, if you're travelling to Thailand, you may want to get guarded against Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus and rabies. In other parts of the world, dengue fever and measles, mumps and rubella can be a problem.
2. Take Your Regular Medication
When speaking with your doctor about your travel plans, ask them what medications you need to take with you. They should also write you a letter outlining the medication, dosage and why you need to take it. That way, if you're stopped by immigration officials, you can show proof.
It's also best to keep your medication in its original packaging.
3. Get Healthy Before You Go
Even if you're headed for a health retreat in Bali, it's a good idea to build your health and immunity in the months leading up to your trip. Often we're so busy before a break that our body can break down as soon as we step off the plane.
You can prevent that somewhat by eating more green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, proteins and superfoods. An easy way to get the nutrients you need is to throw it all in a blender and make a green smoothie. Have a big glass before you board your flight and you'll be flying (naturally) high!
4. Stay Healthy Overseas
We all like to indulge on holiday; it's one of the best parts of travelling! But to stay healthy, don't stray too far from your regular diet. Take supplements if you're consuming less vegetables and have at least one alcohol-free day and night a week.
Then simply get active, explore your destination on foot or bicycle and enjoy the break!
