There is much conflicting evidence about the health benefits of coffee. The truth is, coffee is such a complex beverage that there are both positive and negative benefits and effects to drinking that cup of coffee.

- The coffee bean, being a plant, naturally contains phytochemcials as well as vitamins and minerals
- Rob van Dam, epidemiologist at Harvard University and the National University of Singapore says that due to a substance known as cafestol which actually increases your cholesterol level, unfiltered coffee (boiled or espresso) is not good for you if consumed in large amounts
- Limiting coffee to a minimum during pregnancy is advised
- Drinking cups of coffee per day has been linked with a reduced risk of developing depression
- The National Cancer Institute conducted a study that showed lower levels of abnormal liver enzymes with those people who consumed a higher number of coffees
- Improves cognitive behaviour
- Added milk and especially sugar to coffee has negative health benefits
- Drinking more than 4 cups of coffee or any other caffeine containing beverage may cause side effects such as restlessness, nervousness, stomach upset and rapid heart rate.
Alternatives to coffee
Although there are positive health benefits in drinking coffee in moderation, it is always wise to once in a while, take a break from it and give your body a breather. Here are some alternatives:
Chai
A couple of teaspoons of chai in a cup of warm almond milk is an absolutely delicious way to start the mornings
Dandelion Coffee
This is the nearest to coffee you'll get. Roasted dandelion plus other healthful ingredients come together to give you a superb rendition of your cuppa.
Lemon Water
I realise this is nothing to do with coffee – taste or appearance. However, waking up to a mug of warm lemon water gently gives you a kick start.
