If you're confused about the difference between cleansing and detoxing, you're not alone. The definitions of each depend on who you speak to. Some celebrities – for instance – say they're on a cleanse, when in fact it's a rapid weight loss detox program. So what exactly is a cleanse and a detox, and which one is right for you?
What is Detoxing?
Pharmacy and supermarket shelves are crammed with detox products. It seems a new one hits the shelves every day!
Many detox programs and supplements promise rapid weight loss. They say you'll shed kilos, change your shape and be eternally slim. But as the age-old adage goes, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".
In truth, most of these products deny your body essential nutrients and calories. So rather than safely losing weight, you lose energy, water and even muscle tone. This is because your body goes into starvation mode and begins shedding its mass, so that fewer calories are needed to fuel it.
That's not a good thing. As soon as you return to normal eating – which you inevitably will since most detox programs aren't sustainable – the weight comes back and you've wasted your money.
What is Cleansing?
Cleansing, on the other hand, is a more natural way to rid the body of toxins and get your weight back into the healthy range.
In the traditional sense, a cleanse involves cutting out sugary, processed foods, alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs, and instead enjoying a spread of natural whole foods. We're talking fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and proteins, with limited wheat and dairy.
Drinking plenty of water is also essential to flush out toxins and keep the body performing efficiently.
Some people undertake a cleanse every now and then, whenever they're feeling a bit blah. But you can in fact incorporate this cleanse into your everyday diet and lifestyle. Removing chemicals, toxins and nutrient-poor foods will only work wonders – improving your skin, hair, nails, libido, energy, focus and even boosting your mood.
Just be wary of detox products that claim to be cleanses. If it comes in a packet and promises you the world, it's not really a true cleanse. Nature has everything you need to keep your body clean and toxin-free.
Before starting any detox, cleanse or weight loss program, you should consult a health care professional. A nutritionist, dietitian or naturopath can also assist.
