Last Updated Jul 17, 2020

Making the decision to see a naturopath can be a positive step in taking responsibility for your health. So how do you choose the right naturopath for you? Read on to find out.

Naturopathy take a holistic approach to healthcare that includes natural therapies such as nutrition, herbal medicine, blood analysis and iridology. They work closely with their clients to manage illness or disease and maintain health and wellbeing.

Is the Naturopath Qualified?

To ensure the naturopath you choose has appropriate educational and clinical experience check that they are members of a professional association such as the Australian Natural Therapies Association (ANTA), Australian Traditional-Medicine Society (ATMS) or Australian Naturopathic Practitioners Association Inc. (ANPA). Membership ensures the naturopath meets a minimum standard of qualification, is involved in continuing education and may be covered by private health insurance.

Net Naturopaths

Search the Natural Therapy pages directory to find a naturopath in your area.  To find one that's appropriate think about proximity to work or home. Will it be easy to get to appointments? Does the naturopath work after hours or at weekends?

Naturopath Network

Personal recommendation is an invaluable tool when looking for a naturopath. Ask friends, family, colleagues and other health practitioners. Find out if the naturopath has experience treating your particular health issue. If so, what was the outcome?

An Affordable Service

Initial consultations usually cost more than follow-up appoints. Check if you can claim some of the money back through private health insurance. Also consider the cost of any herbs or supplements you may need.

Nurturing Naturopaths

It's important to choose a naturopath that you feel comfortable with and who you feel cares about your health. After all, you're going to be sharing very personal information and it's imperative that you feel some affinity with them. If you don't understand something ask questions until you're satisfied. If you don't feel happy after the initial consultation find another naturopath.
