The excitement of pregnancy and childbirth is often outweighed by the complications, pain and anxiety identified with these conditions. A woman’s nutrition needs are different due to pregnancy and childbirth. Moreover, when health problems arise during pregnancy and childbirth, the expectant or new mother is not allowed to take medicines and pain killers because of their negative effects on the unborn child. The best approach for a pregnant mother is to stay healthy and turn to natural therapies for treatment and pain relief during pregnancy and childbirth.

Some common pregnancy problems

Common difficulties during pregnancy include discomforts such as muscle aches and pains, allergies, constipation, cravings, nausea, morning sickness, frequent urination and incontinence, headaches, hemorrhoids, edema, shortness of breath, and skin changes. Some of these discomforts, such as cravings, nausea and morning sickness manifest themselves in the early stages of pregnancy, and go away on their own as the pregnancy progresses. Other conditions such as edema, gestational diabetes, urinary incontinence and hemorrhoids usually appear during the later part or at the second or third trimester.

The process of giving birth to a child, however, is another difficult process that comes along with pregnancy. While childbirth may be the shortest phase in the pregnancy, this may also be the most painful and overwhelming experience for a pregnant woman.

Some common childbirth problems

Some of the common complications that may arise during childbirth include extremely long and painful labour, pre-eclampsia, hypertension, and postpartum hemorrhage. The labour process is an unpredictable one, and varies from woman to woman. Some may go into labour for more than twelve hours, while others may experience labour pains just an hour or a couple of minutes before delivery. Labour pains, however, are necessary as these are due to uterine contractions which help push the baby out into the birth canal.

Preparation

Preparation and prevention are necessary to prepare your body for labour and childbirth. Here are some tips that you can use to ease labour and childbirth:

Keep yourself informed

A clear understanding of what is happening to your body and what your body needs to cope with the challenges of childbirth helps reduce the anxiety that may accompany labour and delivery.

Exercise your way throughout the pregnancy, as well as during your first stage of labour

These are perfect pain relieving techniques that can be used to minimize pain during delivery.

Do perineal massage

During your last month of pregnancy, prepare your perineum by doing regular perineal massages. Massage helps you strengthen and exercise your perineal muscles, which play an important role during the childbirth process. This also helps you avoid perineal tearing, should you decide not to have an episiotomy. Stretching exercises are also good for strengthening the perineal muscles and preventing urinary incontinence.

Stretch your way throughout your pregnancy

Aside from toning the perineal muscles, stretching exercises are also believed to be helpful in preventing breech delivery by enabling your baby to assume the natural position for childbirth.

While complications and problems may unexpectedly arise during childbirth, a combination of adequate knowledge, planning and preparation may either reduce the risks of childbirth or help you cope with them.
