There are now many natural products and treatments available for your favourite pet, cat or dog. A range of herbal and homeopathic supplements have been developed to alleviate many ailments that affect your cat or dog, including joint pain, digestive health and their immune systems. Animals are no different to us in that they sometimes become ill or stressed. Natural treatments can be used to supplement your pet's daily meals, and help to speed up tissue healing and give your pet a chance to recover. Modern processed foods are also often lacking in the essential nutrients that your pet may need. A change of diet, away from processed, tinned foods coupled with animal supplements could just be what the vet ordered!
Some common supplements popular for dogs include:
- Coenzyme Q10 is needed to replace the enzymes destroyed in processed meats and feeds. Enzymes are necessary for healthy bodily function, and are especially necessary when an animal has been ill. They also promote improved digestive function.
- Glucosamine is effective when mobility problems due to stiff joints, hip problems and old age hamper the movement of your dogs. Overweight dogs are also a common problem in modern society, where lack of exercise and over-feeding often result in health problems for the unfortunate pet. This condition often leads to more pressure being exerted on joints, putting pressure on the cartilage in the hip and at articulated joints. Glucosamine aids in the production of new cartilage, and is often deficient in many dog foods.
- Flax seed oil is a rich source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, crucial for the healthy functioning of cells in your pets body. These are often destroyed in cooking and processed foods. It is especially effective at reviving a dull skin or coat, and is also successful in boosting a flagging immune system.
- Apple cider vinegar is a versatile remedy that is effective in the alleviation of allergies and aids in digestion. It can also be applied externally to skin irritations and is effective in deterring fleas, ticks and mange as well as maintaining the coat/skin of your pet.
Cats need high levels of protein in their diet, as well as amino acids and fatty acids. Check the ingredient list on your cat food to make sure it contains a balanced diet. When shopping for suitable supplements look for products with the following ingredients:
- Amino acids are often deficient in cat diets. Taurineis especially crucial for healthy eyes and heart function.
- Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E and zinc help to boost a cat's immune system.
- Brewer's Yeast is a natural source of protein that contains vitamins and minerals including zinc that assists in promoting a healthy coat. It is also reputed to repel fleas.
- Calcium and phosphorus are important to promote healthy tooth and bone growth through your cat's life.
- Omega-6 fatty acids derived from wheat germ oil which protect the skin against disease.
- Omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish oils are also necessary for optimum skin and coat health.
- Magnesium is needed to keep your cat's nervous system healthy.
- Vitamin B complex supplements are useful in providing energy for your cat.
What to avoid?
Look out for wheat gluten or corn meal, which are low cost fillers used to bulk up pet food, treats and supplements. They have little or no nutritional value, and should be listed on the products ingredient list.
Some foods and nutrients can actually be harmful/toxic for your pet if given in excess. Before you start using a course of supplements, discuss your pet's specific needs with a veterinarian or holistic veterinarian.
