Dreaming of a healthy Christmas? It can be done. While overindulging during the silly season seems to be an international pastime, it is possible to enter the New Year without any extra kilos.

Here we share our top tips for eating well while being merry this Christmas.

1. Indulge on One Day

It's easy to overdo it during the festive season – with Christmas parties, Christmas Day, the Boxing Day leftovers binge and beyond. Experts suggest choosing just one day to let loose – and behaving the rest of the time.

2. Eat Well Christmas Morning

While the kids might be tempted to rip into their Christmas chocolates before breakfast, it's best to eat normally in the lead up to Christmas lunch or dinner. Start the day with a protein-packed meal – say poaches eggs on toast, oatmeal or a green smoothie – so you're not tempted to snack while cooking. Research shows you're also less likely to overeat at lunch if you eat a healthy, filling breaky.

3. Go Easy on the Alcohol

Alcohol is just empty calories, providing no nutritional value and undoing even the most dedicated health nuts. Of course, you don't want to deprive yourself at Christmas. So perhaps swap every second drink for sparkling water. Or opt for a healthier vodka, soda and lime – rather than sugary champagne or beer.

4. Have a Healthy Christmas Lunch

There are plenty of recipes online for a healthy Christmas meal. They all recommend lean meat – such as chicken and turkey – and plenty of low-fat vegetable dishes. And since it's summer Down Under, cold meat and salad can be a nutritious, refreshing option. Just mind the sauces, dips and desserts. You'll leave the table feeling satisfied, but not stuffed – and ready to hit the beach for a Christmas Day dip.

5. Add Exercise to Your Christmas List

Chances are, you don't want to slog it out at the gym during Christmas. That's ok – there are plenty of fun outdoor options. And you won't even know you're working out! Stand up paddleboarding, swimming, or even a gentle stroll after dinner with your loved ones will keep a bloated belly at bay.
