Yay, it's summer! Say hello to surf, sand and… sunburn? Ouch. We all know our summers are scorching, so how can you keep fit and healthy – without keeling over from heat exhaustion?
Chill out with these 4 ways to workout on hot days:
1. Head indoors
Who hasn't lingered a little too long in the freezer aisle, pretending to decide between pecan and peanut butter ice cream? Yes, air conditioned spaces are heaven sent on hot days.
And the best bit? Gyms and leisure centres are almost always cranked up cold (unless the air-con has broken down, in which case: panic stations!)
Yes, summer is ideal for getting outside and enjoying the glorious weather. But if you'd prefer to work up a sweat without the heat, head to a fitness centre. There are oodles of classes you can try, including yoga for something a little gentler.
2. Choose your timing
Stay safe by skipping outdoor exercise during the hottest part of the day. And instead choose a time that will reduce your risk of overheating – such as early morning or late evening.
3. Drink up
Hydration is essential all year round, but even more so on hot days. Ever noticed how when you skip sipping on water, you wind up with a headache or worse?
Yes, dehydration can be serious – and cause all kinds of health issues. So keep your fluids up, sip water before, during and after exercising, and add a few electrolytes if you're feeling faint.
4. Relax a little
When the barometer is pushing 40, you probably won't smash your personal best – and it could be dangerous to try.
So, enjoy the warmer days and see them as an excuse to mix up your workouts. A refreshing ocean swim, a walk along the beach with the dog at sunset, or splashing around with the kids in a backyard pool… summer fitness can be a tonne of fun!
