Pregnancy is one of life’s natural processes and should be a wonderful time to experience the essence of life. All parents wish for a healthy baby, however due to the stresses of modern life, it can be difficult to know what you should do to ensure a healthy conception, pregnancy, birth and transition to motherhood. Many women want to improve their health but are unsure of what is right for them.
There is so much information out there on the “dos and don’ts” and this can be confusing. We are all unique and what’s right for one woman may not be right for another. There is a lot of media attention on assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF (in vitro fertilisation), however couples can jump into this too early, failing to consider all the relevant factors. Consulting with Rebecca Mar Young and her team means your health, diet and lifestyle will be improved to an optimal level with the gentle and natural techniques of Chinese Medicine. So no matter if you are wanting to conceive, are currently pregnant, are weeks away from giving birth, or are a new mum, your health and that of your family, will be in good hands.
Rebecca and her team offer services focusing on the following areas:
Pre-conception care
IVF
Pregnancy
Mum's health
Paediatrics
PRE-CONCEPTION CARE
Pre-conception preparation involves improving the health of prospective Mum AND Dad to their optimum level and helping their body to produce the best quality eggs and sperm possible. It is very important that both mum and dad are in good health and not stressed out, battling colds or dealing with digestive problems for at least four months prior to conception, no matter whether you are conceiving naturally or with the assistance of IVF treatment.
The reason for this is it takes four months for your body to mature one egg or make one sperm. This means it will take at least this time for any changes you make to your health to positively affect the eggs and sperm. Also, these days many women are taking the contraceptive pill and many men are often involved with toxins, so six months is the required recovery time in these cases. Traditionally the woman has taken her health more seriously at this time and it is necessary for her to regulate her hormones and menstrual cycle. However, since her partner is responsible for half the genetic makeup, it is vital that he is also in optimum health prior to conception to ensure healthy sperm.
The three main factors that are affecting healthy conception today are the state of one’s health (including emotional health), diet, and lifestyle. Your body is a delicate eco-system. It is like a garden of possibility and just as you would prepare the earth before planting seeds, you must also prepare your body, mind and spirit before conception. This will ensure healthy eggs and sperm, a stress-free mind, a regular menstrual cycle and a healthy body - all important elements for conception.
Preparing well means a more trouble-free pregnancy and birth and a healthier baby. There are many lifestyle and diet issues to address that many couples may not realise are so important when it comes to conception. Some of these include: DIY home renovations, tight underwear, laptop computers, alcohol and coffee drinking, not enough water etc. Ask Rebecca and her team how these may be affecting your chances of conception. A study completed in 1992 found that preconception care greatly decreased the incidence of miscarriage, perinatal death and malformations as well as reducing the risk of premature labour, low birth weight and pre-eclampsia.
It should be noted that if you have had trouble conceiving for some time, then you can expect treatment to last longer than four months which is the minimum time suggested to prepare anyone to conceive. This doesn’t mean it won’t happen in less than this time because it sometimes can, however in the majority of cases, it will take longer to re-balance your body, hormones, build up blood if we need to, improve egg quality, de-stress, improve sperm count, morphology and motility and make all the necessary lifestyle and diet changes. Chinese medicine is very good at improving your ability to heal yourself but it does take time. Rebecca and her team are here to guide you through this process with acupuncture, Chinese herbs, diet and lifestyle advice and will give you whatever extra resources we can to support you during this time.

IVF
Rebecca and her team regularly treat clients who are going through IVF cycles. Many studies show acupuncture increases the chances of a successful IVF cycle when treatment occurs shortly before and after embryo transfer. Whilst this is an important time to have acupuncture, it is also necessary to understand that acupuncture has the ability to help your body, mind and spirit cope better with the complex processes all throughout your IVF cycle, as well as in between them and in preparation leading up to them.
It is just as important to prepare your body for pregnancy when under going IVF. Therefore it is ideal to have treatment at least four months prior to commencing IVF and then during your cycles, just as you would if you were falling pregnant naturally. See above for more details.
IVF can be a very stressful time for both the woman and her partner. There are lots of appointments to keep at inconvenient hours and the woman’s body is put under a lot of strain physically and mentally. Acupuncture is wonderful when it comes to calming your mind, body and spirit as well as correcting any physical imbalances. Your body can then get on with doing what it needs to do, which is preparing for a pregnancy. Rebecca and her team use very fine needles as they understand you are already having enough jabs with thick needles and don’t need any more! For details on their pain-free technique, please read below on how Rebecca and her team are different to other acupuncturists.
PREGNANCY
Throughout your pregnancy Rebecca and her team are able to regulate your body, mind and spirit using gentle acupuncture to combat common ailments. The A-Z of these include:
Anaemia
Anxiety
Breech baby (from 33 weeks)
Constipation
Colds & flu
Depression
Fatigue
Haemorrhoids
Hay fever
Heartburn
Hypertension (pregnancy induced high blood pressure)
Insomnia
Itching
Morning sickness
Nausea
Oedema (swelling of hands and/or feet)
Posterior baby (from 33 weeks)
Pre-birth treatments (weekly from 37 weeks to improve chances of a natural birth)
Sinusitis
Small-for-dates babies (intrauterine growth retardation)
Urinary Tract Infections
Vaginal discharge
Vaginal itching
Varicose veins
Vomiting
Vulval varicosities (varicose veins around the vulval area or in the vagina)
Induction
MUSCULO SKELETAL PAIN:
Back
Carpel tunnel (seek treatment early on for good results)
Leg cramps
Neck
Rib
Sciatica
Shoulder
Symphysis pubis pain (seek treatment early on for good results)
Towards the end of pregnancy, Rebecca and her team can treat breech presentation, ripen the cervix and give natural inductions, again using gentle acupuncture and moxibustion techniques (warming meridian therapy). If you haven’t had acupuncture before and everything has been going well throughout your pregnancy, then it is recommended to have acupuncture once a week from 37 weeks to your due date.
This means Rebecca and her team can help to prepare your body for a natural labour. The acupuncture treatment will relax your muscles and tendons, begin to ripen your cervix, increase the production of endorphins and help the baby to fully engage if it hasn’t already. On your due date we offer a natural induction treatment. All these treatments are wonderfully relaxing and highly recommended by many of our clients who have gone on to have natural births.
“I've been wanting to email you all week to let you know that it looks like my acupuncture session with you last Saturday at 9am did the trick! My waters broke at midnight that night and our darling Evie was born at 3.52am on Monday morning! Thanks so much for fitting me in at short notice and for working your magic to prevent me from having to be induced.”
Sara Harrington
There is evidence to support the effectiveness of acupuncture before birth. A 2006 New Zealand study found that pre-birth acupuncture meant there was a: 35% reduction in the number of inductions, a 31% reduction in epidurals and a 32% reduction in emergency caesarians. A 1998 Italian study found that 75% of breech babies turn using acupuncture between 33 and 36 weeks.
“Thank you for all your support during my pregnancy. It really was a great journey. I would do it all again and I would not hesitate in recommending you for anything. Thank you Rebecca.”
Afrodite Barmakellis

MUM'S HEALTH
The transition to being a mum, even if it is the second or third time around, can be tough at times. Rebecca and her team understand this and they will will consult with you and arrange for a specific herbal formula to suit your individual needs. This way you are being supported on a daily basis from the inside out. They can help you with symptoms like mastitis, insufficient milk supply, fatigue, insomnia, anaemia, retained products, anxiety and depression. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be enormously effective in assisting mum to replenish much needed energy and blood after birth.
Often it is difficult for a new mum to think about anyone else other than her beautiful new baby. So if this sounds like you, and you’re now starting to feel the effects of sleep deprivation, running on adrenalin and irregular meals, it is also a important time to get some assistance for yourself in the form of gentle acupuncture and Chinese herbs. They will really help you to re-gain much needed energy and you’ll be in better shape for your baby and your family.
PAEDIATRICS
Shonishin - Children's acupuncture
Rebecca and her team use a non-insertive oriental medicine technique to improve the health of your children. It is called Shonishin. It is such a gentle yet effective technique that children love to receive. No needles are used, instead, small metallic tools are used to gently rub, scrape and tap the skin. This is all that is needed to stimulate their growing energy channels, which in turn has incredible effects on their organ systems.
Shonishin can treat a number of conditions from the very early stages of life to around ten years of age. These include: fever, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic diarrhea, colic, constipation, teething, insomnia, chronic urinary tract infections, bed wetting, habitual nosebleeds, hives, urticaria, chronic ear problems, chronic sinusitis and eczema. And isn't it nice to know they can be treated effectively with such minimal interference?
Children are different to adults in that their meridian (energy) system is developing and growing just as much as their physical organs are and so a completely different form of treatment is required, this being Shonishin. A treatment involves the child sitting on the parents lap (unless they are older and are happy to lie on the treatment table) whilst their whole body is worked over with the gentle techniques.
The treatment can take any where from five minutes to fifteen minutes depending on the size of the child and how hyperactive they are. Your child doesn’t need to sit still. They are followed around the room receiving the treatment on the go. For an acute illness, the child will need two to three treatments in the one week as they respond quickly to energetic treatment. If the illness is chronic, which tends to be the majority of cases, the child will need treatment one to two times per week for two to three months.
It's wonderful for children who have been through a divorce or separation of parents, children who have had many falls or been in car accidents, have had tummy upsets regularly or don't have a good appetite, are hyperactive, have autism, had many ear infections as a toddler, had many vaccinations, etc.
The children really enjoy their treatments and it makes them feel special, they tell us if they are old enough to talk! If they're not old enough, they are completely fascinated with what we’re doing, staring at the areas of their body receiving treatment with wonder.
You will need to book your child in for half hour slots initially and then potentially 20 minute slots. A 20 minute session is $30 and a half hour session is $40. If we haven't seen your child before, it's best that we discuss their case over the phone before you come in, so when your child arrives it allows us to engage with them directly in the session and have the maximum time for treatment.
CHINESE MEDICINE
Rebecca and her team use the age-old wisdom of Chinese Medicine to achieve optimal health for you, your partner and your baby. This natural system of medicine has been around for over 3000 years. It works by re-balancing the body from the “root” of the problem to your “branch” symptoms. And by doing this, it effectively increases the body’s ability to heal itself.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine affect how energy flows through your body. Energy is known as Qi (pronounced “chee”) and runs through energy channels called meridians. These meridians are connected to organs and tissues that have an impact on your emotions and spirit, as well as your main physiological systems such as the digestive, nervous, endocrine, immune, circulatory, reproductive and respiratory systems. When there is illness of any kind, there is a disruption in energy flow. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs aim to clear these blockages and restore health and wellbeing.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are very effective in bringing your body back to health, however, depending on how well you have been looking after yourself, this can take time. It is important to note that Rebecca and her team of practitioners will work with you, not on you. This means there are many opportunities for you to become involved with the process in the areas of diet, lifestyle and meditation techniques, all of which is highly encouraged. What you do on an every day basis will have an enormous impact on your health and we are here to guide you on that path, as well as treat you.
ABOUT REBECCA & HER TEAM
REBECCA MAR YOUNG
Rebecca has gained a reputation for gentle yet powerful treatments.
She is a qualified Chinese Medicine practitioner who trained at the University of Technology in Sydney and completed her internship year in Beijing, China. She has witnessed first hand how well Chinese and western medical treatments worked together in the gynaecology ward of the China Japan Friendship Hospital. She believes in combining the strengths of Chinese and western medicine. She has also studied remedial massage at Nature Care College in Sydney and is currently training to be a yoga and meditation teacher. She is a keen meditator, yogi and regularly practices Qi Gong. Rebecca is passionate about improving people’s lives from preconception to pregnancy, birth and motherhood. She has treated many pregnant women with much success. Rebecca is registered with the Australian Traditional Medicine Society ATMS. Private health fund rebates are available.
Rebecca will be on maternity leave from July 21 to some time during November 2008. Two of her colleagues have joined her team to ensure you receive consistent quality treatment throughout this period. They are both highly experienced in the fields of pre-conception care, fertility, pregnancy and children’s health as well as other fields.
“At seven weeks pregnant I got hit with severe morning sickness to the point I could not get out of bed and wondered whether this was all worth it. I called around many acupuncturists but all said I was too severe and that acupuncture would probably not work but I would have to pay for a minimum three treatments in a row followed by weekly visits with no guarantee. Disheartened I finally got a call back from Rebecca who was honest and upfront and said that she would do just one treatment and take it from there as she felt I would know after one go whether it made a difference or not. Having never done acupuncture before this was what I needed to hear. I was blown away at how instant the relief was, the acupuncture did not completely take all the nausea away but starting on a scale of 10/10 and holding a bucket in front of me, I left her room only 4/10. As the weekly treatments continued, the ball in my throat and the nausea really calmed down and each time I left feeling much better than before I arrived. By 12 weeks I was fine.
We continued the acupuncture during my pregnancy to keep my body in balance, once I reached 37weeks Rebecca did points to get me ready for labour and at home we practiced the points she taught us in the acupressure birth class. It worked because at 39 weeks baby Jack was born very easily, quickly and in good health. My husband used the BL-32 point during labor and it worked a treat as I had no drugs and a pretty much pain free birth. I would definitely use acupuncture and acupressure for my next pregnancy/birth.
Thanks for all you help Rebecca - and not just with the acupuncture, talking with you and learning to live in the present really helped me deal with the concept that i was actually having a baby. My mum is still laughing that I said "my god it is a real human" when jack first looked at me!”

JEFF LEE
Jeff completed his diploma of Shiatsu therapy at Naturecare College in 2000 where he found his passion for Eastern medicine and energetic work. This lead Jeff to complete his Batchelor of Health Science (TCM) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) 2004. Part of the training at UTS was held at the Rozelle drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre where he really discovered the power of acupuncture, empathy and true compassion for the human spirit. After university Jeff spent a year working full time in a fertility clinic where he developed his specialty in male and female infertility, gynecology and general practice.
Jeff has great results in treating male infertility especially sperm count, motility and improving poor morphology. He likes to solve difficult cases and is often successful where others have failed. Jeff also has experience treating pregnant women for many different reasons including preparing them for a natural labour, turning breech babies and more. Jeff has been trained in the Chinese and Japanese acupuncture methods. He is a member of the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese medicine association AACMA and his treatments qualify for health fund rebates.
“Jeff's wholistic approach helped me establish a real sense of peace and contentment during my pregnancy. I have to say that I really enjoyed being pregnant and I truly believe Jeff’s treatments really helped how smooth the whole process was for me. Our twins Bede & Thady are now 4 months old and are delightfully contented little boys.”
Rebecca O’Connell
“Thanks to Jeff Lee for his professionalism and understanding in assisting us in becoming parents to our beautiful boy. Jeff’s treatments of acupuncture combined with TCM herbal treatments were highly effective and I became pregnant within 8 weeks of beginning the treatments. Jeff then assisted me throughout my entire pregnancy with regular acupuncture sessions. I highly recommend Jeff Lee.”
Kate Saxon.
“Infertility is a difficult concept to understand and also to accept. For my husband and I, IVF could not be avoided. I went to Jeff to increase my chances of both conception and implantation. His compassionate and professional manner made the process much easier both physically and emotionally. I truly believe that the treatment provided by Jeff prepared my body for the whole experience. As a result I have a beautiful healthy little girl and I am currently pregnant with our second child, both first attempts at IVF.”

HOW ARE REBECCA AND HER TEAM DIFFERENT TO OTHER ACUPUNCTURISTS?
Rebecca and her team have trained in both Chinese Medicine as well as Japanese acupuncture. Japanese acupuncture is rooted in Chinese medicine but has developed differently over the years. This style of acupuncture is much gentler and more pain-free than Chinese acupuncture. The abdomen is regularly palpated (felt) and forms a core part of diagnosis. Clients will feel pressure pain in areas at the beginning of treatment and find they are gone at the end. The abdomen is called the "Hara" in the Japanese system and it is like the sun in the solar system of your body. It is integral that it is in good working order as everything else flows down stream from it, causing possible problems and symptoms. It needs to be supple yet toned and without pressure pain to be in good health. Japanese acupuncture works with dosages as well. For example, someone who regularly catches a cold, is sensitive to temperature and gets tired easily, will have a shorter treatment time and/or different kinds of treatment, compared to a more athletic person who can withstand any kind of temperature and generally does not get sick.
Considering Rebecca and her team are trained in both methods, Chinese and Japanese, this affords them the advantage of choosing the method most appropriate to the client. The results speak for themselves – just read the testimonials!

"After only three sessions, Rebecca's treatments with acupuncture have enabled me to feel free from the pain Sciatica was causing me during pregnancy. From seven months pregnant my mother was unable to walk when she was pregnant with me due to her sciatica pain, so I was very fearful this would happen to me. I am amazed and so grateful to Rebecca for the treatments and healing she has given me to enjoy my pregnancy".

ACUPRESSURE WORKSHOP FOR PREGNANT WOMEN & THEIR SUPPORT PARTNERS
Learn effective pain relief techniques & more for childbirth using ACUPRESSURE.
Would you and your birth support partner (husband, sister, mum doula, friend) like to know some acupressure points you could press to substantially decrease pain during labour? Encourage the baby to turn if it is in a posterior position? Encourage labour to progress when it has stopped? Calm the mind during labour? If the answer is yes to even one of these questions, then this workshop is a must for you and your birth support partner (as they will be the one’s doing it to you!)
In this workshop you will develop an understanding of where the acupressure points are, how best to put the appropriate amount of pressure on them and when to do it. You & your partner will come away with valuable tools to effectively assist a natural labour. You will also receive a booklet with pictures of where all the points are and info on what they do, as well as a quick reference guide for the big day.
If you’re pregnant, it’s preferable to bring along the person who is going to be supporting you so they can become familiar with where the points are on your body.
“I found using acupressure during labour brilliant. Having used acupressure I wouldn’t even consider being in labour without it. The difference was amazing – I felt a lot calmer and able to cope and much more relaxed. It was really good for me to have my partner so closely involved with each contraction – I felt connected and supported. Acupressure helped me stay focused and calm.”
By Sarah Doherty, Wellington.
“At first I was very cynical about acupressure’s ability to relieve the pain of childbirth, but as soon as my partner’s contractions began, it was obvious that this was really effective. This was also the ideal way for me to feel fully involved in the birth and not get too panicky. We had a trouble-free labour and birth and we now have a beautiful, healthy, happy son. I’d recommend acupressure to anyone having a baby.”
